Chapter Eleven
Ruby kept her distance while the sheriff was there, but the moment he turned to head back to his SUV, she pulled the feast off the grill and raced out to Maggie to check on her and console her with food.
âSnap out of it,â Ruby said. She handed Maggie her plate and sat down with her own. âThe sheriff left. You can relax.â
Maggie stirred the slices of ham and pineapple around on her plate. âI donât feel like I can relax,â she said. âI feel like there is a storm brewing all around me and I canât see it coming.â
Should she pack her bags and move back to her old life? No, she couldnât do that because heâd told her to stay in town. She felt stuck where she was and like she wasnât going to be able to get out no matter which way she turned.
How much danger was she in? Could she actually be accused of a crime?
âI think someone is stirring things around and trying to purposefully make your life difficult,â Ruby said.
âThat Toeffler guy, for sure,â Maggie agreed. âBut why? I donât know who he is, and I donât know why he would be pointing fingers at me.â
âMaybe to keep people from pointing fingers at himself?â
Maggie was quiet for a moment. She speared a piece of ham with her fork and plopped it into her mouth. âI guess the only thing we can do is get busy figuring out what he has to hide,â she said.
âOne step ahead of you,â Ruby said. She set her plate aside and ran back inside the house. She emerged a moment later, carrying a laptop along with her. âLetâs see what we can find out about this guy.â
Maggieâs interest in her dinner increased. She finished quickly and held up her glass when Ruby offered to refill her pina colada. âPreparing ourselves for another armchair investigation,â she said and tipped her glass toward Ruby. She didnât want to make a joke out of it, but something about actually attempting to take part in the investigation that might be able to clear her name was comforting. And maybe even a little fun.
Ruby responded by handing the laptop over. âI think you ought to take the first crack at it,â she said. âI have a feeling you can narrow down anything that has to do with your aunt faster than I can just by asking you questions.â
Maggie accepted the laptop from her and opened the lid. âHow did we do this before?â
âWe just started with what we already knew and went from there,â she said.
âNo, I mean in general. Like, how would we have done this before technology came around?â
âOh, I have no idea.â Ruby laughed. âAll I know is that right now, Iâm thankful for social media.â
âSocial media, great idea! Letâs start there,â she said. She opened every social media application she could think of and entered âJoel Toefflerâ in each of the search features.
âDid you find anything?â Ruby asked a moment later.
